Air pollution is the largest environmental health risk in Europe, and a risk factors for cardiovascular and circulatory, and respiratory diseases, and often leads to premature mortality. The European Environment Agency (EEA) have produced a briefing which outlines concentrations of pollutants in ambient air for 2019, and 2020. The results are presented by pollutant, as relates to both European Union air quality standards and World Health Organization guideline levels.
The briefing highlights that despite improvements in air quality in recent time periods, exeeding standards are still common across Europe. Preliminary data for 2020 has indicated that air quality has likely improved throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
